The Pros And Cons Of Different Cervical Traction Devices.

There are a variety of cervical traction devices that can be recommended to patients suffering from chronic or existing neck pain, headaches caused by neck injuries, or any other type of mild to moderate neck pain. These devices should only be used with the approval of a physician, and should not be used for acute or recent injuries. Ideally, patients using these devices should be involved in ongoing therapy or regular consultation with a doctor to ensure that the traction is being done correctly and effectively in the home health setting.

For patients with mild to moderate chronic neck pain, muscle spasms in the neck, neck tension, or tension related headaches, pneumatic cervical traction devices can a be a great option. These traction units are highly portable, and can be used in a variety of settings, including the home and office. For ideal use, the patient needs to be in the supine position, and not standing or sitting. This increases the downward pressure on the spine. These types of cervical traction devices come on three sizes and they fit over the forehead with a band that is then attached to two shoulder devices that provide continuous upward pressure, stretching the neck. The patient controls the level of the stretch, with a hand controlled pump and release mechanism. The major drawback to these units is that the patient cannot specify the exact same traction at different usage times, since there is no gauge or control that delineates the pressure. However, for patients who need more than 25 pounds of continual pressure and can correctly and accurately determine the level of stretch required, this is a moderately priced option.

Patients who need a lighter weight with cervical and neck traction devices may want to choose a simple option of a traction system that is three or five pounds. This type of system includes a foam neck roll, a head harness, and a pre-filled weight bag. The patient simply gets into a supine position on a bed, with their neck on the foam roll at the edge. The weight then extends down from the back of the head harness to provide the desired weight of traction. These devices are simple to adjust, easy to travel with and they are easy to use without assistance. Replacement parts are available individually from the complete set if needed, and the entire set sells for much less than other types of systems. The major drawback is that these cervical traction devices are only designed for light weights and may not provide enough traction for patients with chronic pain and injuries.

Home cervical traction devices that are similar to those used in therapeutic settings are more costly, but they provide a wider range of options for the patient. Home traction units need to be carefully used, and the patient must be able to understand the risks involved in applying too much pressure or incorrectly using the unit. They can be instrumental in pain management and in eliminating the need for surgical procedures in a number of different conditions. Home cervical traction devices of this caliber are designed to be portable as well as easy to set up and use without the need for assistance.
